Welcome to this month’s edition of Educational Research: Five More Reads. In this series we take a look at some further reading on a specific topic, including open access research papers from various online databases, and Teacher Archive content you may not have come across yet.
Data from Mission Australia’s 2020 Annual Youth Survey Report shows that young people in Australia are increasingly concerned about equality and discrimination, especially when it comes to gender. Over 40 percent of those surveyed said they had been treated unfairly in the past year because of their gender, 48 percent of women compared to 22.5 percent of men.
In this edition of Research Education: Five Further Reading We share five resources related to gender issues, including equality and identity.
- Gender differences in years 6-7. Reading and numeracy skills transition results. This research overview, published in 2016, deals with gender-specific differences in reading and computing power in the middle school level, especially during the transition between primary and secondary level. The results of this examination of the research are presented in three categories to explain gender differences. They are: attitudes and behaviors, intrinsic and extrinsic worth; and engagement in learning.
- Genderreport 2019 Mathematics and Gender: Are attitudes and fears about mathematics changing? This paper by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) examines the likely reasons for girls’ lower interest, participation, and performance in mathematics compared to boys. This exam also covers math anxiety and lower confidence in math skills among young women and elementary school teachers.
- The elephant in the (class) room: Parents’ perception of LGBTQ inclusivity in K-12 educational contexts. In this article, published in 2016 in the Australian Journal of Teacher Education, researchers from Western Sydney University attempted to understand parents’ opinions and wishes about LGBTQI inclusive education. The researchers analyzed interview data from parents and caregivers of students in K-12, which shows that parents’ desire for LGBTQ inclusivity and support for teacher education in the field.
- Implicit Measurements of Teachers’ Attitudes and Stereotypes and How They Affect Teacher Practice and Student Outcomes: A Review. This recently published journal article examined 49 studies of implicitly measured teacher associations with social reasons by students. The studies show that using implicit measures of teacher attitudes has the potential to improve the understanding of students who experience different treatment by their teachers.
- No Limitations: Breaking Gender Stereotypes in the Early Years: A Resource Guide for Educators in Early Years. In this publication, Women’s Health East – an agency committed to improving the health and wellbeing of women in the eastern metropolitan area of Melbourne – provides practical tips and tools for those who work in early childhood settings to help them develop boys and enabling girls to interact and learn with one another without being constrained by stereotypical gender expectations.
“Early childhood educators are in a unique and important position to influence children’s development,” the report said. “They also have the ability to create environments that encourage equitable and respectful relationships, break down harmful gender stereotypes, and promote gender equality to ensure that children are not constrained by gender expectations.”
